Privacy Policy for FreshKeep
1. Introduction
FreshKeep ("we", "our", or "the App") is a food-expiry reminder and household pantry tracker. The App works fully offline as a guest, with no account required. This policy explains what data the App handles, what it sends to outside services, and how, whether or not you create an account.
2. Information the App Processes
- Food and household data you enter: product names, brands, barcodes, categories, quantities, units, locations, purchase/expiry/opened/frozen dates, prices, notes and photos you add; shopping lists; recipes and meal plans; consumption/discard history.
- Photos you choose to capture or import: of products, printed date labels, receipts and recipes, used to read text or suggest items on your device. See Section 3.
- Voice input (optional): audio you record while using "Add by voice" is sent to your device's own speech-recognition service to convert it to text — see Section 3.
- Account details (only if you sign in): email address, display name, and household membership — see Section 4.
- Settings: language, theme, currency, measurement preference, notification preferences.
The App does not ask for or store payment card numbers (purchases are handled entirely by Google Play / the App Store) or any government ID.
3. On-Device Processing and Barcode/Search Lookups (Google Play Disclosure)
- Camera and photo library: used only when you choose to scan a barcode, photograph a date label or receipt, or add a product photo. Date-label and receipt text recognition, multi-item photo suggestions, and optional product-photo background removal (Android only) all run entirely on your device using Google's ML Kit — no image is uploaded anywhere for these features.
- Microphone / speech: used only while you are actively using "Add by voice". Recorded audio is handled by your device's own operating-system speech-recognition service (Google's or Apple's, depending on platform and device support, not a FreshKeep server) to produce text, which you then review before anything is saved.
- Barcode and product-name lookups: when you scan or search for a product, the barcode number or search text you enter is sent to Open Food Facts (
world.openfoodfacts.org/search.openfoodfacts.org), a free, open, non-commercial database, to retrieve product name, brand, ingredients, nutrition and images. No other personal information is sent with these requests. Results are cached on your device. Product data from Open Food Facts is published under the Open Database License (ODbL); images under CC BY-SA. - Your control: camera, microphone and photo-library access are requested only when you use the related feature and can be denied; typed entry is always available as an alternative.
4. Optional Account, Sync and Household Sharing
Creating an account is entirely optional. If you choose to sign in (email/password or Google):
- Your local data can be uploaded to a private household record in Google Firebase (Firestore, in the
asia-south1region) so it is backed up and can sync across your devices. - If you invite others to a household, the items, locations and recipes you choose to share become visible to the members you invite, governed by the role (owner/editor/viewer) you assign. Access is enforced on Google's servers by security rules, not only by the app.
- You can sign out at any time (your data stays on each signed-in device), and you can request deletion of your account and cloud data from Settings → Delete my data, or by emailing us.
- We do not sell, rent or share your data with advertisers or data brokers.
If you never sign in, none of your data ever leaves your device (aside from the barcode/search lookups described in Section 3).
5. Advertising and In-App Purchases
- FreshKeep may show ads (Google AdMob) to free users at natural break points, never during scanning, editing, cooking or recording consumption. Before any ad is requested, you are shown Google's consent form (via the User Messaging Platform) covering what advertising identifiers and data are used, where legally required, and you can change your choice later in Settings.
- Optional paid upgrades (monthly/annual/lifetime) are handled entirely by Google Play Billing / Apple StoreKit. We never see or store your payment details; purchase status is verified through the store.
6. How Your Data Is Stored
- All data is stored in the App's private storage on your device, in an encrypted-at-rest container where the OS provides one.
- If you sign in, a copy of the data you choose to sync is stored in Google Firebase under our project, access-controlled per household and per user as described in Section 4.
- Backups you create (Settings → Export/Backup) are saved as a file only where you choose to save it (e.g. your device's Downloads folder or a cloud-storage app you select) — FreshKeep does not upload backups anywhere on its own.
7. Data Retention and Deletion
- Local data stays on your device until you delete it (per item, or entirely via Settings → Delete my data) or uninstall the App.
- If you have an account, deleting it also deletes your cloud-stored household data that only you own; data shared with a household you do not own may be removed from your view but retained by the household owner until they delete it.
- You can request manual deletion or an export of your data at any time by emailing kjkartikjt0002@gmail.com.
8. Children's Privacy
FreshKeep is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country) and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
9. Important Notice About Food Safety
FreshKeep's expiry reminders and recipe suggestions are organisational tools based on dates and information you enter. They are not a food-safety guarantee. Always check the physical food, its storage conditions and the printed label before eating, regardless of what the App shows.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy as the App changes. Material changes will be reflected by updating the Effective Date above, and significant changes will be noted in the App's release notes.
